Grab your party hats and get ready to blow out the (nontoxic) candles as we celebrate MADE SAFE’s fifth birthday this month! It’s amazing we’ve been in the marketplace highlighting ecosystem-safe and sustainable products for five years now. We have a team of incredible people who work hard to bring this work to life and I am as proud of each of them as I am of all our brands who bring safe and sustainable products to you. What’s abundantly clear is that there is a market for this work and we are excited to continue to grow!
When I set out over five years ago to launch MADE SAFE and the ecosystem evaluation process, we ventured to create something bigger than a certification program. We wanted to focus on the impact and safety of the inputs into the products we use daily – in order to find ones that would not harm humans OR the ecosystem. With the help of world-class scientists and advisors, this aspiration became reality and this anniversary helps mark the success of our unique ecosystem approach.
We start by looking at our banned list of more than 2,500 ingredients of harm, then we use our dynamic ingredient database to screen every ingredient and sub-ingredient for known or suspected human harm. To ensure ecosystem safety we investigate whether each ingredient will bioaccumulate; persist in the water, sediment, or soil; contribute to air pollution; or cause harm to aquatic life or wildlife.
As we kick off our fifth birthday in 2020, we are excited to bring you more certified products, research on ingredients, and actionable ways to protect yourself and your loved ones. We will continue to advocate for the ecosystem and work with companies to move toward safe and sustainable chemistries. We must continue to promote safer ingredient standards in order to foster a cleaner world.
To every person and brand that has stood with us, supported our mission, and helped us to grow in these past five years, we offer a resounding “thank you.” We could not make such a great impact without the help of others who care enough to invest their time and money into the important work that we do here at MADE SAFE. Thank you to our community of amazing change makers!
As we step into our next five years and beyond at MADE SAFE, we hope that the work we do at MADE SAFE continues to be a bright spot for our community.
