The need for Plastic Free July extends beyond the plastic pollution that we can see with the naked eye.
Plastics are relatively new to the world, having only existed for a little over one hundred years. As is the case with so many chemicals in use today, plastics have been used widely since their conception, proliferating in our environment prior to our having a complete understanding of their effects. For this reason, we are more or less living in an uncontrolled experiment on the effects of plastic chemistries.
As we participate in Plastic Free July this year, the MADE SAFE team is considering ways that we can refuse single-use plastic and reduce the amount of plastic we consume in general. Plastic pollution causes an enormous number of problems for oceans, freshwater ecosystems, our food systems, and our communities. At MADE SAFE, we understand the far-reaching problems of plastic—everything from endocrine disruption to a lack of biodegradability, and many more issues in between. For this reason, MADE SAFE certification does not permit the use of single-use plastic in any certified products and we also highlight brands that use sustainable packaging for their products.
Plastic Pollution is a devastating problem plaguing our planet, especially our oceans. According to the book Plastic Soup, if we continue at the current pace, by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight.
