For the Biome announcement imageFor The Biome is the invention of Paul and Barbi Schulick. Built on their belief that the world and its inhabitants are deeply and inextricably connected, they founded a company that focuses on the interconnection of life. Both Paul and Barbi are experienced meditation teachers so their website offers free meditations that you can get delivered to your inbox on a weekly basis, which is one way they are addressing mental health and stress.

To address physical health, Paul and Barbi have crafted skincare products, including the newly MADE SAFE® certified Restore Essence Spray, that respect the skin as a protector, an intelligent organ, and a home to millions of microrganisms. To help and heal the community at large, they donate 3% of every purchase you make. This is quite a feat: creating a company that nurtures the mind, body, and the planet. Our hat’s off to the Schulicks and their team at For The Biome. Read on to learn more about the ideas behind their mission, and the amazing ingredients in the Restore Essence Spray.

Q&A with Paul Schulick, Founder & CEO

Why is it important to have third-party validation for your products?
We put so much care into choosing the right ingredients that whether it’s certifying our products as vegan, organic, or nontoxic, we invest heavily to ensure our customers walk away satisfied and with their questions answered. We believe third-party validation makes it easier for our consumers to navigate through claims like ‘natural’, ‘plant-derived’, or even ‘organic’. For instance, we’re starting our MADE SAFE journey with our Restore Essence Spray. When someone sees the trusted MADE SAFE certification on the Restore Essence Spray, they can rest assured this product is nontoxic for themselves and the environment.

Why did you start your company?

Founders of For The Biome photoThe journey began for myself and my partner, Barbi, as meditation teachers 40 years ago. We believe the mind, body, and planet act as one indivisible whole and we have three targeted branches of our business that address mental health, whole-body wellness, and philanthropic work in our community.

When it comes to skin health, how we adapt to stress is a major indicator of the skin’s outward appearance and overall function. We see the mind as one of the greatest tools for shaping stress responses and we offer free guided meditation to help our customers along this inner-journey. Our full line of skin health solutions supplement this journey with formulas that are 100% active and respect the connection between the skin and its microbiome, the universe of microorganisms that populate the skin and help it effectively respond to stress.

The sourcing and production of our products is low-impact and gentle on the environment while 3% of each purchase is donated to supporting climate justice, sustainable housing, and empowering women. It’s a high-impact mission but it’s critical that we support the interdependence of everything, and that’s what For The Biome aims to do.

Why are your products different from other, more conventional, products in the space?
Our approach is rooted in a deep respect for the skin and its connection with whole-body wellness. The skin is actually a sentient organ that has developed its own communication network to speak with the brain, gut, and the microbiome. When this connection is nurtured, our skin is capable of fully sensing our environment and eliciting shifts in our emotions—a phenomenon that researchers are now referring to as the ‘third brain’. A great way to see the skin’s ability as the third brain in action is when you think about someone you love. Does your skin tingle? Do you get goosebumps? That’s your skin triggering a chemical response and producing hormones that can even uplift your mood.

With this in mind, we designed our products to awaken the skin-microbiome relationship because we believe the wisdom of the microbiome is integral to happy, healthy skin and connection with the rest of the body’s systems. We knew our formulas had to be free of anything that would disrupt this sensitive environment and also needed to remain gentle on the planet. Using both tradition and science, we identified exclusively whole ingredients that were clinically recognized to soothe even the most reactive skin types, obsessively sourced the most sustainable, ethical, and efficacious forms of each ingredient, and stabilized and elevated their potency through our proprietary technologies: Artisanal Fermentation™ and CO2 volcanic extraction.

The result, in the case of Restore Essence Spray, is a gentle formula for all skin types featuring cosmetic-grade Manuka honey and Swiss black bee honey ferments. The skin is nourished with prebiotic nutrients for a thriving microbiome and skin-strengthening postbiotic actives like hyaluronic and lactic acids. We went to extreme lengths to ensure the purity, efficacy, and sustainability of this product and we expect that our customers will sense the profound healing intention behind its formula.

What do you wish shoppers thought about more, and why?
Over the past 40 years in the wellness industry, I always hoped that consumers would think more deeply about the full impact of their purchases—how would the product in their hand affect them physically and mentally? How would it affect the environment? Perhaps they found the most efficacious form of chamomile—but, was it picked by someone getting a living wage? I’m thrilled to see that more and more shoppers are beginning to employ this line of questioning and demand products that meet this ever-important need. The beautiful aspect of my wish is that I am beginning to witness it coming true.

What have you done to make your life healthier, and why?
Some would definitely call me obsessive because I’ve devoted my life to whole-body wellness. I practice yoga, tai chi, and meditation and am scrupulous with what I put in and on my body. What I’ve learned along the way is that wellness is truly a journey, it never ends and must be diligently maintained—mind and body—for the best results.
