When founders searched for an affordable mattress made of organic materials and produced in an ethical way, they found a lot of claims, but nothing that satisfied their quest. So, they decided to take on the challenge of creating what they were looking for. Since the inception of Avocado Green Mattress, they’ve expanded to include other sleep-related products including MADE SAFE certified Green Pillows, and Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protectors.
MADE SAFE: Why are you proud of your MADE SAFE certification?
Avocado: We’re proud of our MADE SAFE certification because we know it’s meaningful to our customers. We’re on a mission for a healthier home and planet, and becoming a brand with MADE SAFE certified products is part of fulfilling that mission.
MADE SAFE: Why did you start Avocado Green Mattress?
Avocado: In 2016, our founders Jeff and Alexandra wanted to buy a green mattress — made from nontoxic, natural and organic materials — that they could actually afford. But instead of choices, they found dubious claims and companies that were pretending to be green. What was often being marketed as green, natural or nontoxic was, in truth, hardly so. They believed they could do better by people and our planet.
MADE SAFE: How are your products different from other, more conventional products in the space?
Avocado: Our green mattress is handmade in California with simple materials: GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified wool, and GOTS organic certified cotton. Our mattress uses organic latex cushioning combined with an internal, zoned, pressure-point support unit. We don’t use any polyurethane foams, memory foams or petroleum-based gel layers. We also don’t use scary chemical flame retardants or solvent-based adhesives, so there is no chemical off-gassing to worry about. In fact, in addition to being MADE SAFE certified, our mattress is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. The result? An eco-conscious hybrid mattress that provides a healthy, luxurious night’s sleep and a greener environment.
MADE SAFE: What do you wish shoppers knew about your products?
Avocado: Avocado Green Mattress owns our own Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified factory in Los Angeles. As a result, we are able to uphold the highest standards of quality control at every single step of the ideation, development, design and manufacturing processes. We work directly with our suppliers, enabling us to work towards sustainability in all forms: social, economic, and environmental.
MADE SAFE: Why do you think a nontoxic mattress is so important?
Avocado: As we spend one-third of our lives sleeping on our beds, the nontoxic Avocado Green Mattress is an indispensable part of a good, healthy night’s sleep. And we believe a good night’s sleep is crucial for overall health and wellbeing.
