A quick glance at a product’s ingredient list can tell you a lot about its safety – if you know what to look for! With over 85,000 chemicals used in an array of products today, it can be hard for anyone to effectively track safe vs. toxic ingredients without a database at your fingertips, but we recognize it’s an excellent place to start. Read ingredients and jot down anything you don’t understand to look up later. You’ll learn a lot.
You’ll also learn a lot by looking at safely formulated products and notice what they don’t contain. Take Alaffia products for example. Many shampoos contain parabens which are preservatives that mimic estrogen. Research has shown they act as potential endocrine disruptors leading to an increased risk of breast cancer. PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum-based compounds widely used in personal care products, and may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane – both potential carcinogens. We’re proud to highlight shampoos from Alaffia as MADE SAFE™ certified. See our list of certified Alaffia shampoos here.
At Made Safe we not only look at the ingredients on the labels, but we deeply vet products looking for possible areas of contamination and check for ghost ingredients (those are ingredients contained within other ingredients that aren’t listed out on labels – and sometimes brands don’t themselves know they’re in products.) Our chemist reviews each and every ingredient in a product submitted by a brand. We want to make sure that nothing in it will harm humans or the environment. We take a 360-degree approach looking at bioaccumulation, environmental degradation, general toxicity, as well as aquatic toxicity when screening ingredients. We also don’t permit thousands of ingredients considered to be: behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, GMOs, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs.
