Let’s take a look at some of the toxic substances that are commonly found in conventional deodorants. (Remember: You’ll never find these within MADE SAFE certified products – including the brand new Not Just Deodorants from Seventh Generation, which come in four different scents!)
Ingredients of Concern in Conventional Deodorants
Triclosan: Triclosan is linked to endocrine disrupting capabilities and increased risk of breast cancer. It’s been banned since 2018 for use in hand soaps by the FDA.
Phthalates: Phthalates are linked to effects from endocrine disruption, especially in males. Exposure can impact female health as well, causing early onset puberty which is associated with breast cancer later in life.
Parabens: Parabens are hormone impersonators, mimicking estrogen in the body. Exposure to parabens has been linked to breast cancer.
Fragrance: Because fragrance formulations are often proprietary information, the identity of ingredients is often unknown. Numerous substances that have been identified in “fragrance” are substances of concern.
Diethanolamine: Diethanolamine is linked to cancer. Additionally, ethoxylation, the process of treating an ingredient with ethylene oxide, is used in the production of diethanolamine. 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen, can be a byproduct of ethoxylation.
Butane: Butane is prohibited from cosmetics in the European Union, and restricted in Canada, due to concerns of contamination with carcinogenic and toxic 1,3-butadiene. However, there are no such restrictions in the United States.
Aluminum: Aluminum can cause genomic instability on the cell level, meaning it can increase our cells’ tendency to mutate; mutations can increase the chance of tumor growth.
