Seventh Generation Not Just Deodorant imageWhat deodorant to you use? It’s a question MADE SAFE® staffers always get asked. And we understand why – the truth is that finding a safe and effective deodorant can be truly difficult. No one wants to use a product filled with harmful ingredients, but they don’t want to smell funky either.

Collectively, the MADE SAFE team has tried over a hundred deodorants in our quest for something safe and effective. That’s why the launch of Seventh Generation’s new MADE SAFE® certified Not Just Deodorants™ is so exciting. We finally have an answer to that ever-present question.

Seventh Generation’s Not Just Deodorants™ are MADE SAFE certified, which means they’ve been vetted to uphold some of the highest standards of human and environmental health. It also means they don’t contain any of the harmful substances listed below, as well as thousands of other substances restricted by MADE SAFE because they are known or suspected to be harmful to humans or our ecosystem.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better – did we mention that you can find them at Walmart stores across the U.S. for only $4.97?

Let’s take a look at some of the toxic substances that are commonly found in conventional deodorants. (Remember: You’ll never find these within MADE SAFE certified products – including the brand new Not Just Deodorants™ from Seventh Generation, which come in four different scents!)

Ingredients of Concern in Conventional Deodorants

Triclosan: Triclosan is linked to endocrine disrupting capabilities and increased risk of breast cancer. It’s been banned since 2018 for use in hand soaps by the FDA.

Phthalates: Phthalates are linked to effects from endocrine disruption, especially in males. Exposure can impact female health as well, causing early onset puberty which is associated with breast cancer later in life.

Parabens: Parabens are hormone impersonators, mimicking estrogen in the body. Exposure to parabens has been linked to breast cancer.

Fragrance: Because fragrance formulations are often proprietary information, the identity of ingredients is often unknown. Numerous substances that have been identified in “fragrance” are substances of concern.

Diethanolamine: Diethanolamine is linked to cancer. Additionally, ethoxylation, the process of treating an ingredient with ethylene oxide, is used in the production of diethanolamine. 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen, can be a byproduct of ethoxylation.

Butane: Butane is prohibited from cosmetics in the European Union, and restricted in Canada, due to concerns of contamination with carcinogenic and toxic 1,3-butadiene. However, there are no such restrictions in the United States.

Aluminum: Aluminum can cause genomic instability on the cell level, meaning it can increase our cells’ tendency to mutate; mutations can increase the chance of tumor growth.
